Riddle School 5 is the fifth game in JonBro's Riddle School series, a set of point-and-click puzzle adventures where you are a student trying to get out of a strange, hostile school. Nothing here is a fast reflex test. You look at a scene, click on whatever seems suspicious, pick things up, and work out what odd combination of objects moves you to the next screen.

It is the fifth numbered entry, and the page you are on runs the original Flash file through Ruffle, so it plays the way it did when it first circulated. If you came to the site for the first Riddle School, this is where the numbered story arc finishes, and it is a much bigger game than the early ones. Plan on a long, patient sitting rather than a five-minute break.

The series is known for its dry humour and puzzles that lean on lateral thinking more than logic. Some answers are obvious in hindsight, and some are only fair if you have been clicking on everything.

How to play

Everything is done with the mouse. Click Main Menu, then start the game. In a scene you click balloons, scenery and items to interact with them. Items you collect go into the inventory, and you click an item there to use it, then click the thing in the scene you want to use it on.

A typical stretch goes like this: search a room by clicking every object that looks like it could be more than decoration, grab what you can, then try your inventory on anything that reacted to your clicks. When a room stalls, you are usually missing an item from the previous room or an interaction you skipped.

Tips

  • Click everything, including background scenery. Hotspots are often small and are not highlighted.
  • When stuck, try each inventory item on each interactive thing before you assume you missed something elsewhere.
  • Go back to earlier screens after picking up a new item. Puzzles often pay off a room or two later.
  • Play the earlier games first if you care about the story, since this entry builds on the series.

Similar games on Riddle School

The original Riddle School, along with Riddle School 2, 3 and 4, is the natural place to begin, and each is shorter than this one. Riddle Transfer and Riddle Transfer 2 keep the same style with a different setup. For a change of scenery, Escape From School and Escaping the Prison are other escape-style games with a similar click-and-collect approach.

It suits players who enjoy a slow puzzle at a desk, with a mouse rather than a keyboard, and who do not mind getting stuck for a while.
